About David

David Haig Alexander is a Washington, D.C.-based artist, educator, and founder of EnoArts whose practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, mixed media, and interactive art. His work transforms familiar symbols and motifs into a unique visual vocabulary to explore perception, memory, identity, communication, and belief.Alexander earned an MFA in Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with concentrated study in painting, drawing, and sculpture. His early formation included institutional scholarships, graduate teaching experience, and encounters with influential American painters and sculptors, including study connected to Stanley Whitney and Ray Yoshida, and a 1995 summer internship with sculptor Luis Jiménez in Hondo, New Mexico. His exhibition history spans more than 25 years, beginning with early recognition through the Nippon Steel Juried Exhibitions in Chicago, solo exhibitions in Philadelphia and Kraków, Poland in 1999, followed by a published interview in Teraz, a Polish community newspaper. After graduate school, Alexander exhibited a solo show in downtown New York City and became active in the Los Angeles artist communities showing in iconic galleries such as Cannibal Flower, Hangar 1018, The Hive Gallery, jFerrari Gallery, The Black Cat Gallery, and participating with the Pharmaka Artists Group.Alongside his studio practice, Alexander spent more than a decade working in information architecture, user experience, digital strategy, interactive media, and product innovation for Fortune 500 organizations, as well as the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This professional experience informed his artistic focus on systems thinking, artwork as interface, communication, viewer participation, and the construction of truth through painting and sculpture.Following this period of professional development, Alexander returned to a more public studio practice in the Washington, D.C. region with The Prologue, a 2018 solo pop-up exhibition. Since then, his work has appeared in many DC gallery spaces such as Artomatic, The DCArts Center, Washington Sculptors Group, and the 2023 ADMO Art Walk. His work is held in private and corporate collections, including The Nippon Steel Corporation.Based in the Washington, D.C. region, Alexander maintains a multidisciplinary studio practice through EnoArts, where he continues to develop paintings, drawings, sculpture, mixed-media works, and interactive projects that bridge traditional art-making with contemporary questions about technology, belief, memory, and human perception.

An abstract colorful painting on paper which I painted in 2001 in oval sapes as look-through. Title 'Together no. 2.' - abstract watercolor art; a gouache painting on paper I painted in 2001. Size of the original art-work on paper is c. 70 x 60 cm. I experienced around 2001 these kind of watercolor paintings for myself as a kind of 'collaging' with several simple forms, but in paint. I tried to push the forms somewhat together in space, to create internal tensions in the image between the individual shapes.

Collect What You Love
Collecting art is both an intuitive and thoughtful act. A work may first speak through color, scale, figure, surface, or atmosphere, but the strongest pieces continue to unfold over time. David Haig Alexander’s paintings, drawings, collages, and mixed-media works are made for collectors who value visual presence, conceptual depth, and long-term meaning.Alexander’s work explores identity, memory, perception, truth, technology, and the systems that shape human experience. Individual pieces can stand on their own, while also belonging to larger series that develop across years of studio practice. Figures, symbols, flowers, speech bubbles, stacks, stars, platforms, and algorithmic structures recur throughout the work, creating connections between individual pieces and the broader language of the studio.
Available Works
Available works include paintings, drawings, works on paper, collage-based pieces, mixed-media works, and selected works from ongoing series. Some pieces are bold, colorful, and immediately visual. Others are quieter, more symbolic, or structurally complex.Collectors are encouraged to spend time with the work, follow the connections between series, and consider how a piece might live within a home, office, collection, or architectural space. The right work should hold attention, invite return, and continue to reveal new layers with time.
Collector Guidance
For new collectors, the process can begin with attraction: a color, a figure, a phrase, a mood, or a question that stays with you. From there, the conversation can expand into scale, placement, materials, framing, series context, and long-term significance. For experienced collectors, Alexander’s work offers multiple points of entry into a larger evolving practice. A single painting may act as a visual anchor, while smaller works, studies, drawings, or related pieces can deepen the relationship to a series.Private guidance is available for collectors considering a first acquisition, adding to an existing collection, selecting work for a specific space, or exploring a commission.
Begin a Conversation
Collecting is a relationship with the work, but also with the artist’s larger vision. Studio visits, acquisition inquiries, commissions, and collector conversations are welcome. For acquisition inquiries, studio visits, commissions, or exhibition opportunities, please contact me.

Artist CV

I transform perception through contemporary myth-making.My work begins with a question: How do people come to believe what they believe?I am interested in the invisible systems that shape human experience. Stories, images, language, technology, religion, politics, advertising, memory, and art history all influence how we understand ourselves and the world. These systems do not simply reflect reality. They help construct it.I make paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages, and interactive works that examine this process. Rather than illustrating a single idea, I build visual systems where familiar motifs acquire new meanings. Figures, speech bubbles, flowers, stars, platforms, mushrooms, pixelation, stacks, and fragmented narratives appear throughout the work as part of an evolving symbolic language. Their meanings shift depending on context, repetition, material, and relationship to the viewer. My background in painting, drawing, and sculpture gives the work its physical foundation. My experience in information architecture, user experience, and digital strategy informs the way I think about structure, sequence, interaction, attention, and interpretation. In both painting and interface design, meaning is shaped by how a viewer moves through an experience.I work in series because each body of work allows me to build a world. Some works emerge through allegory. Others emerge through abstraction, figuration, language, material experimentation, or repeated structures. The works often develop in parallel, with one painting informing another. Over time, symbols return, change, contradict themselves, and gather new associations.Much of my work is concerned with the instability of perception. I am drawn to moments when certainty breaks down: when a face becomes fragmented, when a flower becomes algorithmic, when a speech bubble becomes a philosophical device, when a platform becomes a belief system, when a surface becomes both image and object.I do not make work to provide answers. I make work to create spaces where uncertainty can be held long enough to become visible. If the work succeeds, viewers leave with a heightened awareness of how images, stories, symbols, and systems shape what they see, what they remember, and what they believe.
